Seeking treatment can be a challenge all in itself and navigating through the insurance process can prove complex. Most health insurance providers offer coverage for behavioral health services. Here are some questions that I believe will assist you when exploring your behavioral health coverage with your insurance provider.

Here’s what you want to know when you call to speak with your insurance carrier:

• Does my current health insurance plan include behavioral health benefits?
• Do I need to obtain written approval or a referral from my primary care physician before selecting a behavioral health provider?
• Do I have a deductible and if so, can you provide me with the details?
• Do I have a co-pay and if so, can you provide me with the details
• Is there a limit on how many sessions I am approved for in one calendar year? If so, what is that limit and can you provide me with additional details on this?
• Are there any other determining factors that I should know before selecting a behavioral health provider?
