According to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), a SAP is a Substance Abuse Professional who evaluates employees that have violated a DOT drug and alcohol program regulation and makes recommendations concerning education, treatment, follow-up testing and aftercare. SAP’s can represent a major decision point an employer may have in choosing whether or not to return an employee to a safety-sensitive position. SAP’s neither advocate for the employer or the employee but rather serves as a professional servant to the public. The SAP’s role as a “gate-keeper” in the return-to-duty process provides an important service to the employee, employer and the traveling public.
Individuals who are provided a referral to a SAP have been identified as being in violation of a DOT regulation of drug and alcohol use as an employee performing a safety-sensitive role. This violation has rightfully caused the employee’s ability to perform safety-sensitive duties into question and further initiating the return-to-duty process.
Yes you may seek your own treatment for substance abuse/addiction related conditions. However, seeking your own treatment does not exempt you from completing the return-to-duty process with a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP). DOT regulations require all employees performing safety-sensitive positions who have been identified as having violated a DOT regulation on drug and alcohol use must seek an evaluation by a qualified SAP prior to being considered for returning to a safety-sensitive position.
The fee for this service is $550.00 and includes the following: the Initial Assessment to determine the level-of-care needed to address substance abuse needs, educational and treatment program referrals, ongoing monitoring of your progress ensuring compliance with treatment recommendations and conducting a final Follow-up Evaluation which is provided to the employer communicating your success in fulfilling treatment requirements.
Because each client’s situation is unique, it is unrealistic to estimate a length of time this process can take. However, the successful completion of this process will be based on your commitment and willingness to accept the SAP’s recommendations and apply them.
